Students analyze paragraphs 8 through 13 by responding to questions in an evidence-based discussion. In this excerpt, the tension builds as the narrator finally murders the old man, and buries the body in the floor. Lesson activities include a series of questions, discussion in pairs, and focused annotation in which students consider how Poe’s structural choices develop and refine the text’s central ideas of madness and obsession.
