In Unit 2, students read The Hope Chest by Karen Schwabach. This novel is a piece of historical fiction set in 1920 during the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women in the United States the right to vote.
Students will work on summarizing and analysis of characters in the first half of the unit, and analysis of a central theme in the second half of the unit. They will use a series of chapter-by-chapter reading guides that include historical background information, a glossary of both domain-specific and academic vocabulary, and lists of complex figurative language (idioms and adages) related to this historical time period.
