Washington's Use of Rhetoric


Description

In this lesson, students read and analyze paragraphs 3 and 4 of the “Atlanta Compromise Speech,” in which Washington tells the story of “a ship lost at sea” to further develop his point of view that African Americans should improve their circumstances by participating in the economic development of the South. Students explore Washington’s use of rhetoric in these paragraphs in order to analyze how his style and content contribute to the persuasiveness of his speech, and record their analysis on their Rhetorical Impact Tracking Tools.
